NDIS Assistive Technology Helping Lower Anxiety

Living with anxiety can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming. But assistive technology (AT) is changing that. Devices like smart lights, video doorbells, and digital door locks give control back to those who need it. With these tools, people with anxiety can better manage their environment, feel safer, and live more independently. No more worrying about who’s at the door or whether the lights were left on. Assistive technology makes it easier to focus on living, instead of worrying.
We’ve seen how assistive technology can change the lives of NDIS participants with anxiety. It builds confidence, creates a sense of safety, and takes care of daily tasks, freeing them to focus on what matters most. But you don’t have to be an NDIS participant to take advantage of the benefits of assistive technology. No matter your level of anxiety, from occasional, mild to severe, when your home is upgraded to a smart home, management of your environment is in the palm of your hand, easy and accessible.
Read below to learn about the smart home devices and security camera systems that we’ve installed in homes around Brisbane and SE Qld. For the anxiety sufferer, these devices make living at home safer and more manageable.

First some helpful resources:

Installing security cameras to help manage anxiety

Without a doubt, feeling safe and secure is at the top of mind for anyone with anxiety, no matter the degree. It’s why home security cameras are our most requested smart home device. Security cameras offer protection in several ways. Placed in clear view, they act as a deterrent, making potential intruders think twice before attempting a break-in. With constant monitoring, homeowners can stay alert and take immediate action when needed. For those with anxiety, having control over their environment brings great relief and builds confidence.

Security cameras aren’t just for the exterior of the home. Moving between rooms, like going from upstairs to downstairs, can trigger anxiety. By placing wireless cameras in key areas, you can check who or what is in a room before entering, simply by viewing the live feed on your smartphone. Fewer surprises equals less anxiety.

We install both wireless and CCTV security camera systems into homes around Brisbane and SE Queensland. Schedule a free quote and we’ll discuss your options, helping find one that suits you best.

How does a smart door lock assist those with anxiety?

A smart door lock can be a game changer for someone with anxiety. With the ability to lock and unlock doors remotely through a smartphone, it eliminates the worry of whether the door is secure. No more second-guessing or unnecessary trips back to check if it’s locked. This sense of control brings peace of mind, reducing anxiety about home security. You can check the status of your door whether you’re at home, like before going to sleep, or when you’re away, such as at work or on holiday. Anxiety often spikes when people are away, worrying if they remember to lock the door. It’s a quick way to ruin peace of mind or spoil a much-needed holiday. With a smart door lock, you can verify the door’s security remotely, easing your mind and letting you focus on relaxing.

A digital door lock offers more than just security for those with anxiety; it also eliminates the need for a physical key. No more worrying about lost or misplaced keys. Entry can be done in several ways – using a code, through an app on your phone or smartwatch, or even with a fingerprint on certain models. It’s reassuring to know that keys aren’t being hidden in the garden for an unwanted visitor to find…

For carers and family members, a digital door lock is highly convenient. It allows up to 100 unique codes, giving trusted individuals access without a physical key. A regular carer can use their code to enter, removing the need to be let in each time. The homeowner receives alerts whenever someone enters or exits, helping them feel in control and reducing anxiety. Temporary codes can also be granted, making it easy to manage access for medical specialists, home helpers or the occasional tradesperson. Once the code is no longer needed, it can be removed or set for specific times, accessible through an app. This assistive technology empowers those wanting to live in a stress-free environment independently, giving them control and peace of mind.

For added security, we offer the option of installing a deadbolt. Depending on the current door setup, a deadbolt provides an extra layer of protection beyond a standard door lock. It’s a simple but effective way to enhance security and give homeowners additional peace of mind.

How a smart video doorbell makes you feel secure at home

For someone with anxiety, a video camera doorbell can greatly help in reducing stress. It allows visibility of the front door without needing to answer or move, easing the fear of unexpected visitors. The ability to speak to the person outside through the smart doorbell adds another layer of comfort, making interactions less intimidating. Alerts sent directly to the phone app provide constant awareness of any activity near the door, offering a sense of control and security. It’s a simple and effective way to make the home feel safer and more manageable, helping lower overall anxiety.

Level up security with a smart garage door or electric gate opener

For someone suffering from anxiety, a smart garage door or front gate opener provides similar benefits to a smart door lock. It removes the worry of misplacing a remote or fob, or having them fall into the wrong hands. With everything controlled through a smartphone or smartwatch app, the person has full control over entry and exit, and only those they trust have access. There’s no need to stress about whether the garage or gate was left open, either. From anywhere, they can check the status and lock it with just a tap on the app, bringing peace of mind and reducing anxiety.

Create a calmer home environment with smart lighting

For someone with anxiety, smart lighting can make a real difference in creating a relaxed home environment. Through the phone app or voice command (if a smart home assistant is installed), it’s easy and quick to adjust the brightness level of the room. Instead of harsh lights that can increase stress, soft and soothing lighting alleviates tension. Program the lights to gently intensify in the morning, in tune with the daylight. Set them to dim as the light fades in the evening.

Install smart bulbs and now colours can also play a role in easing anxiety. Soft blues bring a calming feel, while warm yellows add comfort. Cooler greens can create a sense of balance. Switching between these colours helps shift the mood, making the space feel more relaxed. It’s a simple way to take control of the room and find some peace when anxiety sets in.

Keep things cool and calm with smart air conditioning

Some people with anxiety experience rapid body temperature fluctuations, making it important to maintain a comfortable home environment during stressful times. Others may worry about the cost of running air conditioning. Installing a smart aircon not only improves comfort but is also more efficient and cost-effective, reducing financial concerns. It also helps reduce stress, as there’s no need to worry if the unit was left on after leaving the house. With a smart aircon app, the homeowner can easily check the status and turn it on or off from any place they are.

Maybe you already have an air conditioning system installed. We can upgrade it to a smart aircon system using innovative technology that can be retrofitted to any split system with an infrared remote. Now you can enjoy all the benefits of a smart air conditioner at a fraction of the price! Switch it on and off from the app remotely and easily program it to operate when a particular temperature is reached, both hot and cold.

Or maybe you’re looking for a new air conditioning system. We can install a state-of-the-art smart aircon split system in as many rooms as you need. Our premium models are feature-rich, giving you complete control to cool and heat your home from the app, no matter where you are. This makes it extremely efficient, cutting down on unnecessary costs commonly associated with aircon systems.

Simplifying home management with a smart home assistant

For someone suffering from anxiety, a smart home might sound like it would add more stress, but a smart home assistant actually makes everything easier. All your smart devices can be connected and operated through a central point. For someone feeling overwhelmed by daily tasks, being able to control their home with a few words can be a huge relief. With just a simple command, they can lock the door, turn the lights on or off, or switch off the aircon as they exit the house. It takes care of the everyday tasks that may seem small but still need attention.

The most popular smart home assistants are Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. We have experience installing all of these models and can give advice on which is the best option for you.

A day in the life of Tina, supported by Assistive Technology

The practicality of assistive technology is best understood through a case study. Let’s take a look at Tina, an NDIS participant dealing with high anxiety, living at home, and wanting a life without additional stress and worry. With so many things to do daily, it can quickly spiral out of control. Smart devices can play a role, helping to create a calm environment by taking on the tasks that can be delegated to assistive tech.

7:00 AM
Tina has smart lighting in her bedroom. It has been programmed to slowly brighten the room, in tune with the daylight. This feature allows her to start the day naturally and positively. Her upgraded smart air conditioner also keeps the room at a consistent, comfortable temperature, automatically adjusting the thermostat as needed.

7:30 AM
With a simple command, Tina asks her smart home assistant what’s on the schedule for today. She has found using Google Home’s calendar feature extremely useful to alleviate her anxiety that builds up when she thinks about all the tasks she has ahead.

8:00 AM
Tina heads to her workplace. She checks the status of the front door lock when she arrives, to make sure it’s locked properly.

10:00 AM
She remembers the aircon was on when she left the home. She checked the aircon smartphone app to make sure it turned off automatically when she left the house.

5:00 PM
It’s been an extremely hot day today. Tina wants the house to be cool before she gets there. She turns on the aircon from her smartphone before she leaves the office.

6:00 PM
As the light diminishes, Tina’s smart lighting system adjusts the indoor lights. She likes to use a warm, orange light at night time to create a calm environment. This is done easily through the smart lighting app.

6:30 PM
It’s dinner time and Tina is reminded by her smart home assistant to take her daily medication.

9:00 PM
As Tina gets ready for bed, she speaks a simple command to her smart home assistant. Instantly, the living room lights switch off, while the bedroom and bathroom lights come on, creating the perfect evening routine.

9:30 PM
Before bed, Tina checks her phone to make sure the front door is locked and all the lights are off. The smart aircon has already been programmed to cool down, ensuring she gets a restful night’s sleep.
