NDIS Assistive Technology & OCD

For individuals living with OCD, home can sometimes feel like a source of anxiety rather than a sanctuary. Worries about safety, cleanliness or routines can dominate daily life, making it hard to truly relax. Fortunately, assistive technology in the form of smart home devices is changing that. Devices like digital door locks, video doorbells, smart security camera systems and smart lighting provide more than just convenience – they help create a secure, predictable environment. This can be life-changing for an NDIS participant managing OCD symptoms. These tools help create a sense of stability and control, reducing stress and making home feel like the safe, comfortable place it’s meant to be.

At Smarter Homes Australia, we’ve seen firsthand how assistive technology can improve lives. For people living with OCD, these devices help restore a sense of control, reduce stress, and create a space that feels safe. Whether you’re managing mild symptoms or more intense compulsions, assistive technology can help you regain peace of mind at home.

Read on to learn about the smart home devices and systems we’ve installed across Brisbane and SE Queensland, helping individuals with OCD manage their environments and find comfort in their homes.

Security cameras for reassurance

Safety concerns can be a constant worry for someone with OCD. Installing a home security camera system offers significant peace of mind in the following ways:

  • Deterrence: Outdoor cameras make your home less appealing to intruders.
  • Monitoring: Check live feeds anytime, anywhere, from your smartphone.
  • Verification: Quickly confirm your doors and windows are secure without repeatedly checking them yourself.

Indoor security cameras are also helpful, giving people with OCD a sense of control over their home. They make it easy to check if doors are locked or appliances are off, reducing the need for repetitive checking behaviours. With just a glance at their phone, they can feel reassured and focus on other things.

We install both wireless cameras and CCTV systems tailored to your needs. Schedule a free quote, and we’ll help you choose the best option.

Digital door locks for instant control

Smart door locks are an excellent solution for managing common OCD-related concerns. They offer features that bring both convenience and peace of mind:

  • Remote locking: Lock and unlock your door from anywhere using your smartphone, removing the need for repeated physical checks.
  • No physical keys: Eliminate worries about losing keys or hiding spares in unsafe locations.
  • Activity alerts: Get notifications whenever the door is locked or unlocked, providing real-time reassurance.
  • Unique access codes: Create individual codes for trusted people and revoke them anytime for added security.

For an NDIS participant dealing with OCD, these features reduce anxiety and provide reassurance. With a smart door lock, you can replace uncertainty with confidence, making your home a safer and more manageable space.

A smart video doorbell significantly reduces stress

Unannounced visitors can be a major source of anxiety for someone living with OCD, disrupting the sense of control and routine. A smart video doorbell helps take the stress out of these situations by offering practical features:

  • Real-time video feed: Check who’s at the door without needing to answer it.
  • Instant notifications: Receive alerts whenever someone approaches your door, keeping you informed at all times.
  • Two-way communication: Communicate with visitors remotely, putting you in control of the conversation.

By providing clear visibility and control, a smart video doorbell allows you to easily manage unexpected situations. Whether you choose to interact or not, it creates a safer and more predictable environment. This helps reduce stress and uncertainty in your daily life.

A smart garage door or electric gate opener for security and convenience

Smart garage doors and electric gates offer practical solutions that simplify daily life while enhancing security. These smart devices are particularly helpful for individuals with OCD as they reduce the need for repetitive checks and manual adjustments. Here’s how these assistive technology devices make a difference:

  • Remote access: Open or close the front entry points from anywhere using your smartphone.
  • Status checks: Check the status instantly through an app. This eliminates the need to physically go back and check, providing reassurance wherever you are.
  • Enhanced security: Be alerted if the door or gate remains open for a certain period, ensuring you never miss a potential security issue.

Set a calming mood with smart lighting

Smart lighting can be a valuable tool for individuals with OCD, helping them create a structured and calming environment at home. Here are the key benefits:

  • Automate routines: Schedule lights to turn on or off to create a predictable environment.
  • Simplified checking: Minimise the need for repetitive checks with a smartphone app or voice commands.
  • Create calm: Adjust brightness and colour tones to promote relaxation or focus, based on your preferences.

We can upgrade your existing lighting system through the installation of smart bulbs or smart switches. Contact us and we can discuss the options available to you.

More smart technologies designed to ease the mind

Creating a calm and organised home environment can greatly benefit individuals with OCD. Maintaining a consistent temperature promotes comfort, better sleep and an improved mood. We can upgrade your existing split system air conditioning to a smart, energy-efficient setup or install a state-of-the-art smart split system. With either option, you’ll enjoy the convenience of controlling it with a smartphone app or setting it to operate automatically, ensuring your home stays just the way you like it.
Another highly beneficial smart home device is a smart home assistant. This device acts as a central hub, connecting all your smart home devices for seamless integration. With a single app, you can manage your devices effortlessly, whether it’s adjusting lighting, locking doors, or checking a visitor at the front door. Enable voice control, and you can handle these tasks with simple commands, making home management even easier and accessible in the palm of your hand.

A day in the life of Emma, supported by Assistive Technology

OCD can be a debilitating condition, making it difficult to manage daily life, especially when trying to live at home, alone. Assistive technology devices are offering help in many ways. To understand the practical benefits, we’ll look at a typical day for Emma, an NDIS participant diagnosed with OCD.

6:30 AM
The smart lighting in her bedroom gradually brightens early in the morning, creating a calm start to her morning.

7:00 AM
Using her smart home assistant, Emma reviews her schedule and the weather for the day ahead.

8:30 AM
After leaving the house, Emma checks she has locked the front door by checking the status on her smartphone app. Likewise she checks the garage is closed. The digital record of both devices being locked give her the peace of mind to carry on her day.

3:00 PM
A notification from her video doorbell shows a delivery. Emma instructs the courier to leave the package in a safe spot using the two-way communication feature.

6:30 PM
As the evening sets in, her smart lighting adjusts to a soft, warm tone, creating a soothing atmosphere. The CCTV security camera system installed to the exterior of her house gives Emma a feeling of safety. So too does the deadbolt digital door lock on the front door.

10:00 PM
Before bed, Emma checks her smartphone to make sure all the doors are securely locked. With a simple voice command she turns off all the lights in the house at once.

With these smart home devices, Emma transforms her home into a safe, organised and manageable space.
